The Groove Clan Crew will host this class that will cover different styles and techniques of dances associated with “Popping”. Classes will be geared towards drills and learning foundation to build vocabulary for freestyle dancing. Some styles to be covered are Waving, Robot, Popping, Boogaloo, Glides and Footwork.

Teaching Artists

Dani Tirrell is a dancer, performer, choreographer and dance educator.  Most recently Dani’s work has been seen at the Seattle International Festival of Dance, Black Choreographers Festival (San Francisco), Poetry + Motion (Seattle), On the Boards: 12 Minutes Max (Seattle),  Bearing Witness: Quare Arts Project (Seattle), Global Dance Party (Seattle), Young Tanz Sommer (Austria),  and Day of Dance: A Community Partnership (Detroit).

As a Detroit native, he was introduced to Voguing and House dance through friends and members of the Detroit Electronic Music scene.  Although he is trained in classical and modern dance technique, he finds true liberation, passion and freedom when he is engaged in House and Vogue dance styles.

In 2012 he was awarded a grant through The Central District Forum of Arts and Ideas Creation Project.  Dani is the Founder and Artistic Director of Dani Tirrell Dance Theater/ Color Lines Dance Ensemble.

Amy O’Neal is a freelance Contemporary/Hip Hop dancer, performer, choreographer, and dance educator.   She has been based in Seattle WA USA and making dance centered work for stages, screens, galleries, rock shows, and the street since 1996.  She is known for mixing and and sampling in her movement vocabulary to create a unique and true language of her own.  From 2007-2012, she made work under the moniker, AmyO/tinyrage and was presented by the TBA Festival (Portland,OR) , On the Boards Northwest New Works Festival (Seattle,WA) , Northwest Film Forum (Seattle, WA), Seattle Theater Group/The Moore, Project Motion (Memphis, TN), Bumbershoot (Seattle), and Velocity Dance Center (Seattle). From 2000-2010, Amy was co-director of locust (music/dance/video)with musician/composer Zeke Keeble. locust was presented by On the Boards (Seattle), Seattle Theater Group/The Moore, The Myrna Loy Center (Helena, MT), Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out (Becket, MA), Joyce Soho (NYC), TBA Festival (Portland, OR), Bates Dance Festival (Lewiston, MN), University of Montana (Missoula, MT), SUSHI (San Diego, CA), the Southern Theater (Minneapolis, MN), Next Dance Cinema (Seattle, WA), ODC Theater (San Francisco, CA), Kyoto Arts Center (Kyoto, Japan), Next Moment Film Festival (Tokyo, Japan), and UNAM Danza sin Fronteras (Mexico City, Mexico).

Since 2002, Amy has frequently collaborated with musician/comedian, Reggie Watts. She choreographed for “A Very Reggie Christmas” at On the Boards and has improvised with him in Seattle and NYC at The Triple Door, Bumbershoot, Gallapagos and Comix. She performed in his show “Disinformation” at the TBA Festival (Portland,OR), Under the Radar Festival (NYC), Andy Warhol Museum (Pittsburg, PA), Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and ICA Boston. She choreographed for Reggie’s music video “Fuck, Shit, Stack” released through Comedy Central in 2010 and performed in “Reggiedency” at the San Francisco Sketchfest in 2013. She produced and collaborated with Reggie and LA based cinematographer, Gabriel Bienczycki on the video “Sects” which you can find on Jash.com along side content from comedic luminaries Sarah Silverman and Michael Cera.  She choreographed for LA based electro pop artist Jules Leotard for the video “Body Builder” and danced in the official music video for “Iridescent Asteroid Mists (Feat. Palaceer Lazaro) by Seattle based electronic artist, Vox Mod.

Amy danced with the Pat Graney Company 1999-2002, Scott/Powell Performance 1997-2004, and in Mark Haim’s acclaimed “Goldberg Variations” in 2006. Amy was the lead singer of Zeke Keeble’s band Marrow from 2002-2006 and sung in the Seattle based David Bowie cover band, Heroes. Amy’s work has been commissioned twice by Spectrum Dance Theater/Donald Byrd, twice by Degenerate Art Ensemble, Cornish Dance Theater, Moving Current (Tampa, FL), and Seattle Theatre Group in 2005 collaborating with Savion Glover, 2009 with locust, 2011 with AmyO/tinyrage, and 2012 collaborating with Daniel Bernard Roumain for “More Music at the Moore”.

Amy teaches Contemporary dance technique, Hip Hop techniques, improvisation,and choreography regularly at Velocity Dance Center,Massive Monkees Studio: The Beacon, and with the Dance This program in Seattle. She has also taught her wildly popular Bottom Heavy Funk (Hip Hop/Club/Street based class) at Velocity for over a decade. She is the co-founder and lead teaching artist of Seattle Theater Group’s “Young Choreographer’s Lab” which merged with Velocity Dance Center to form the “Seattle Youth Dance Collective”. She has taught, conducted residencies, and been a guest speaker at the University of Washington, Cornish College of the Arts, Washington University (St. Louis,MO), University of Idaho, Idaho State University, University of Montana, Texas Woman’s University, University of Oregon, Northwest Vista College (San Antonio), Grand Valley State University (Grand Rapids, MI), Conduit (Portland), The Houston Met (Houston, TX), Okinawa Prefectural Museum (Okinawa), Cal Arts, The Sweat Spot (Los Angeles, CA), NYU Playwrights Horizons School (NYC), Broadway Dance Center (NYC), 100 Grand (NYC), and Dance New Amsterdam (NYC).

Amy has received funding from the Seattle Mayors Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, the international DanceWEB scholarship (2000), the Mary Levine Fund, Artist Trust , 4 Culture, the Bossak/Heilbron Charitable Foundation, the National Dance Project, the National Performance Network, the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, the Creative Capital Foundation, and the Foundation for Contemporary Art. Amy has been awarded creative residencies at Bates Dance Festival (07), Headlands Center for the Arts (08), the US/Japan Choreographers Exchange through Dance Theater Workshop. MASS MOCA, and the Japan Society (09), and was Velocity Dance Center Artist in Residence (2011). Amy is a two time Artist Trust Fellow, a two time Stranger Genius Awards Nominee, over funded her latest solo work on USA Projects, and holds a BFA in dance from Cornish College of the Arts.

INTRO TO WAACKING WORKSHOP

New or a beginner to waacking? Tracey Wong will be teaching two intro to Waacking workshops!

She will be teaching different material each week so attending both workshops are highly encouraged. The second week will progress a bit from the first week, but we will definitely review. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to message us or Tracey!

WEEK 1 (9/22 – DONE): 
Conditioning, basic arm patterns, posing, punking, across the floors

WEEK 2 (9/29 – This Sat):
Conditioning, more complex arm patterns, musicality & punking.
(will build off of the last week so the pace will be faster, but there will be a quick review)

WEEK 3 (10/6 – Next Sat):
Conditioning, more complex arm patterns, musicality, and punking. Will learn a combo (but one that allows you to make CHOICES with many parts of your body)

*Classes will be focused on being able to have a solid foundation to help you FREESTYLE!

COST
$20 for one workshop or $30 for both workshops
*Cash only; venmo also accepted

If it is your 2nd or 3rd class, it will just be an extra $10 if you took the 1st or 2nd class!

Come 15 minutes before class to sign in! Parking may be tough on a Saturday so give yourself an extra 10 minutes as well!

WHAT IS WAACKING?
Waacking is a club-style dance style originating from LA’s underground disco scene in the 70s by the gay community. It is about reclaiming one’s individuality and celebrating themselves as they are. The movement consists of moving ones arms to the beat to highlight sounds that the audience normally would not hear. There are also elements of punking (acting and taking on different characters), as well as posing. It is a style that is inspired by black & white films and tv series such as Batman, King Kong, Looney Tunes. It also takes inspiration from drag queens, Hollywood stars like Greta Garbo, and Bruce Lee.

IN THIS WORKSHOP
We will be going over the basic elements in waacking – waacking, punking, and posing. We will go through basics, across the floor and freestyle exercises, and will be connecting with our peers in some activities. Get ready for your arms to feel that good burn. 😀

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Tracey Wong is a dancer, educator, and community event curator based in Seattle. She is a co-founder and co-director of Malicious Allure and is formally trained in waacking, vogue, and hip hop and is the first regular waacking instructor in Seattle. Tracey is an alumni member of the dance groups UW Hip Hop Student Association (dance captain/ choreographer), Studio 3 Company (co-director/ choreographer), Boogiezone Breed Seattle, the CRUW (choreographer), The Z Project, and The Purple Lemonade.

Tracey’s work has been featured in Seattle Arts Museum’s events “Remix” and “The Legendary Children”, Seattle Gay Pride Festival, Bumbershoot, and Flavr Blue at Capitol Hill Block Party’s Mainstage. She’s also worked with top brands such as Nordstrom Pop Up Shop and Microsoft.

Tracey competes internationally in the battle scene. She has recently been the winner of Vancouver Street Dance Festival (VSDF) 2018’s Waacking category in Canada. She has also been the winner of PDX’s Waacking battle “Nostalgia” (2016) three times in a row, Canada’s “Sweet 16” Waacking Category Battle (2018), and has placed top in the waacking category in NYC’s well known battles, Ladies of Hip Hop, Step Ya Game Up, and Waack Bazaar this past summer. She was a finalist in Seattle’s World of Dance 2016 Headbangerz Brawl and in LA’s International Whack/ Punk/ Pose Festival, Waackfest 2016.

Tracey strives to continue to build a strong bond in the Seattle dance community and continues educating others about the rich history of Waacking while also learning more and more herself each day!

Karleen has been practicing and teaching yoga for over 10 years, certified in Hatha and Power Vinyasa. For the rest of May, classes will be donation based as we figure out what days and times work best for the community. All are welcome, we are looking for community input!

New or a beginner to waacking? Tracey Wong will be teaching two intro to Waacking workshops!

She will be teaching different material each week so attending both workshops are highly encouraged. The second week will progress a bit from the first week, but we will definitely review. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to message us or Tracey!

WEEK 1 (9/22 – DONE): 
Conditioning, basic arm patterns, posing, punking, across the floors

WEEK 2 (9/29 – This Sat): 
Conditioning, more complex arm patterns, musicality & punking. 
(will build off of the last week so the pace will be faster, but there will be a quick review) 

WEEK 3 (10/6 – Next Sat):
Conditioning, more complex arm patterns, musicality, and punking. Will learn a combo (but one that allows you to make CHOICES with many parts of your body)

*Classes will be focused on being able to have a solid foundation to help you FREESTYLE!

COST
$20 for one workshop or $30 for both workshops

If it is your 2nd or 3rd class, it will just be an extra $10 if you took the 1st or 2nd class!

Come 15 minutes before class to sign in! Parking may be tough on a Saturday so give yourself an extra 10 minutes as well!

WHAT IS WAACKING?
Waacking is a club-style dance style originating from LA’s underground disco scene in the 70s by the gay community. It is about reclaiming one’s individuality and celebrating themselves as they are. The movement consists of moving ones arms to the beat to highlight sounds that the audience normally would not hear. There are also elements of punking (acting and taking on different characters), as well as posing. It is a style that is inspired by black & white films and tv series such as Batman, King Kong, Looney Tunes. It also takes inspiration from drag queens, Hollywood stars like Greta Garbo, and Bruce Lee.

IN THIS WORKSHOP
We will be going over the basic elements in waacking – waacking, punking, and posing. We will go through basics, across the floor and freestyle exercises, and will be connecting with our peers in some activities. Get ready for your arms to feel that good burn. 😀

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Tracey Wong is a dancer, educator, and community event curator based in Seattle. She is a co-founder and co-director of Malicious Allure and is formally trained in waacking, vogue, and hip hop and is the first regular waacking instructor in Seattle. Tracey is an alumni member of the dance groups UW Hip Hop Student Association (dance captain/ choreographer), Studio 3 Company (co-director/ choreographer), Boogiezone Breed Seattle, the CRUW (choreographer), The Z Project, and The Purple Lemonade.

Tracey’s work has been featured in Seattle Arts Museum’s events “Remix” and “The Legendary Children”, Seattle Gay Pride Festival, Bumbershoot, and Flavr Blue at Capitol Hill Block Party’s Mainstage. She’s also worked with top brands such as Nordstrom Pop Up Shop and Microsoft.

Tracey competes internationally in the battle scene. She has recently been the winner of Vancouver Street Dance Festival (VSDF) 2018’s Waacking category in Canada. She has also been the winner of PDX’s Waacking battle “Nostalgia” (2016) three times in a row, Canada’s “Sweet 16” Waacking Category Battle (2018), and has placed top in the waacking category in NYC’s well known battles, Ladies of Hip Hop, Step Ya Game Up, and Waack Bazaar this past summer. She was a finalist in Seattle’s World of Dance 2016 Headbangerz Brawl and in LA’s International Whack/ Punk/ Pose Festival, Waackfest 2016.

Tracey strives to continue to build a strong bond in the Seattle dance community and continues educating others about the rich history of Waacking while also learning more and more herself each day!
