Moksha and Massive Monkees Studio:The Beacon have teamed up to bring the neighborhood regular and accessible yoga classes. We invite you to join us for Yoga Break Down, a 60-min class of either Hatha – slower paced, focusing on breath in individual poses, good for beginners or Vinyasa – flow, a quicker pace, focusing on breath synchronized with movement, good for intermediate + advance. Classes will be led by Karleen Ilagan, co-owner of Moksha, held at The Beacon. Karleen has been practicing and teaching yoga for over 10 years, certified in Hatha and Power Vinyasa. For the rest of May, classes will be donation based as we figure out what days and times work best for the community. All are welcome, we are looking for community input! 
6-7PM LEVEL THREE | KIDS BREAK ACADEMY | INTERMEDIATE

Introduction to intermediate level Breaking moves, combinations and battle

LEVEL THREE students are first required to advance through LEVEL TWO with recommendation from the instructor.  New students with previous dance experience can receive permission from the Studio Director to begin at LEVEL THREE.  This series will introduce students to new intermediate level foundation moves. Students will put together move combinations and begin experiencing the competitive element of Breaking, the battle!

-Continued practice in fundamentals of Breaking

-Repetition training and drills for securing intermediate level moves into muscle memory

-Improve strength, flexibility and coordination in preparation for advanced level moves

7-8PM LEVEL FOUR | KIDS BREAK ACADEMY | ADVANCED

Exploring concepts and ideas to start creating your own moves & style 

LEVEL FOUR students are first required to advance through LEVEL THREE with recommendation from instructor.  Breaking is a very spontaneous and improvisational dance but learning the foundation of the dance is necessary to preserve the true Bboy/Bgirl style and give students a solid foundation of basic movements to start exploring and developing their own unique style. All beginner and intermediate levels focused primarily on learning and perfecting the foundation. We will continue perfecting foundation in this class but also begin to explore concepts and ideas to develop students own unique styles and moves. Students will experience battling and begin creating routines.

Little dancers love to hit the floor! Kids will warm up by practicing coordination and rhythm dancing along with easy steps to fun songs. Then they will be guided through an energetic exploration breakdancing movements including simple toprock, footwork, spins and freezes. Dancing games are always a big hit at the end of class.

This class is offered as a drop-in class with a max of 14 students per class.

12-1PM Beginner Breaking and Foundation (Ages 13+)

1-2PM Kids Breakin “MOVEMENT” (Beginner / Ages 6-11)

“MOVEMENT” Kids Breakin is for kids ages 6-11 and will introduce kids to basic Breakin movements in preparation for intermediate level “SKILLS” Kids Breakin Class.

The benefits of taking this class are increased motor skills, flexibility, balance, rhythm, memory and strength while having fun, playing games and making new friends!

 

 

2-3PM Kids Breakin “SKILLS” (Intermediate / Ages 6-11)

Hip Hop/Jazz Choreo w/ Justice and Robin is a technique and choreography class that infuses elements of hip hop, lyrical and jazz into choreographed performance-level routines.  Students will learn the fundamentals of each style, focusing on coordination, syncopation, isolations, and exploring choreography that combines street dance with funk, jazz and a whole lot of personal style.

 INTERMEDIATE/ ADVANCED WAACKING WITH TRACEY WONG

What is Waacking?

 

Waacking is a club-style dance style originating from LA’s underground disco scene in the 70s by the gay Black and Latinx community. The movement consists of moving ones arms to the beat to highlight sounds that the audience normally would not hear. With arm movement being a huge part of waacking, there are also elements of punking (acting and taking on different characters), as well as posing. It is a style that is inspired by black & white films and tv series such as Batman, King Kong, Looney Tunes, Star Wars, Bruce Lee.

Class Description
 
In this class, you will learn about the history of this style, basic to complex arm patterns, posing, punking, how to travel, and fun grooves with Tracey! Tracey ensures that class feels like a community and is a safe space for you to reach your full potential and to express your own individuality. All the foundation learned will help you apply it all into extremely fun freestyling exercises! 
 
Who is Tracey Wong?

Tracey Wong is a dancer, educator, and community event curator based in Seattle. She is a co-founder and co-director of Malicious Allure and is formally trained in waacking, vogue, and hip hop and is the first regular waacking instructor in Seattle. Tracey is an alumni member of the dance groups Boogiezone Breed Seattle, The Z Project, and The Purple Lemonade. She is currently a contributing choreographer for the all-female street styles group called The CRUW and co-directed the hip hop dance company Studio 3 Company.

Tracey’s work has been featured in Seattle Arts Museum’s events “Remix” and “The Legendary Children”, Seattle Gay Pride Festival, Bumbershoot, and Flavr Blue at Capitol Hill Block Party’s Mainstage. She’s also worked with top brands such as Nordstrom Pop Up Shop and Microsoft.

Tracey competes heavily in the Seattle battle scene under the alias “Malicious Hi-Chew”. She has been the winner of PDX’s Waacking battle “Nostalgia”, Seattle based vogue competition “En Vogue”, and is the champion for Seattle based all style battle “Matter of Movement 2016”. She was a finalist in Seattle’s World of Dance 2016 Headbangerz Brawl and in LA’s International Whack/ Punk/ Pose Festival, Waackfest 2016.

“I started waacking because it looked dope. The more I delved into this style, the more I learned to love it in its entirety. How it embraces individuality, drama, music, and history. It pushes me to reflect on myself and to explore the spectrum of emotions I can go through. Every time I waack, I tell myself that it is perfectly okay to be me.”

Tracey strives to continue to build a strong bond in the Seattle dance community and continues educating others about the rich history of Waacking while also learning more and more herself each day!

7:30-8:30PM Popping w/ Groove Clan (Intermediate)

Clan’s intermediate Popping class will focus on the Electric Boogaloo (Boog style) style of Popping and Boogaloo. We will introduce drills that cover rhythm, grooves, and moves that will help build confidence and dance vocabulary. The goal is to make connections and build on other foundations that we have covered in our other classes and any other dance styles that you might have under your belt. Some of the things we are covering this quarter:

  • Boogaloo Rolls
  • Walkouts
  • Twists (Romeo, Egyptian, Roman)
  • Twist-O-Flexes
  • Neck-O-Flexes
  • Social Dances (Four-Corners, the Bump, Camel Walk, Shamrock)

 

 

 

8:30-9:30PM LOCKING (Teens/Adults)

Locking w/ Lockstatic; originally called Campbellocking, is a soul dance from the 1970’s. Created by Don “Campbellock” Campbell in the clubs of Los Angeles, it involves using strong quick arm movements (points, and wrist rolls) and dynamic pauses (the lock). Locking also utilizes social dances from the era such as the break down, the rock steady, and the funky robot.
In this class we will drill the vocabulary of locking, learn basic to intermediate patterns and combinations. This class will also focus on the soul dances that influence and improve our locking abilities, while focusing on playing with rhythm patterns and having fun in our freestyle.

5:30-6:30PM LEVEL ONE | Kids Break Academy | Intro to Foundation

LEVEL ONE is for first time students with no formal break dancing experience.  This class is offered to kids ages 6-12 years old.  This series will introduce students to basic, beginner level, foundational moves of Breaking created by the pioneers of the dance style in the 1970s. It is important for B-boys and B-girls to learn the foundation to preserve the true B-Boy / B-Girl style. Students will get familiar with the capabilities of their bodies while learning new moves. Instructors will teach and review moves often to build students coordination, conditioning and confidence.
