The Beacon Story

The Beacon Story

The Beacon was launched in 2013 and offers classes in the most popular dance styles, art forms and entertainment practices for the youth and young adults of today. Our programming is rooted in cultural movements post late 1970s that were born of oppressive situations and have helped unify people and push forward liberating movements in the POC, LGBT and underserved communities. Dance styles like Breaking, House, HipHop, Vogue, Waacking, and Popping and artistic practices like Emceeing, DJing, Street Art and Contemporary Music Production have grown to become the most popular outlets of artistic expression today and cultural art forms that young adults and kids can relate to and have a voice through. Our organization is BIPOC owned and operated with most of the teachers from BIPOC communities. We feel it's important to continue passing forward the history and knowledge of our culture to encourage growth in and advancement of society in ways such as creating identity and purpose, creating safe and encouraging environments, and unifying people, ideas and voices.

Our ability to share these art forms as 25 year practitioners artistically and professionally is unique only to those who have lived the lifestyle. The forms of expression we teach have been passed down from generations. By learning these movements, expressing these art forms, interpreting our own versions and teaching them to others, we have positively affected our community and have created better lives for ourselves. We learn the lessons from cultural movements before us and will continue passing forward knowledge and experiences that empower others to build their own self-worth, increase their skills and overstand their unique gifts. Our global community unifies under the values of peace, unity, love and fun. We come together, one nation under a groove, unified through music, movement and creative expression. The Beacon will continue providing a hub for the community to come together, support and encourage each other with the hopes that ourselves and future generations can learn, explore and discover the best versions of themselves through transformative experiences and through the application of this knowledge and these art forms. Each person has a creative spirit. We provide opportunities to express, share and connect through the expression of this spirit.

With Love,
